Calling on councils to make FOGO available to all and accept compostable packaging in FOGO

Calling on councils to make FOGO available to all and accept compostable packaging in FOGO
The issue
Sign the petition now and make composting accessible for all! Every signature counts.
Why?
- Only 1 in 5 Aussies believe that councils make composting easy!
- Only 164 of the 562 councils offer Food Organics & Garden Organcis waste services, and only 43 accept compostable packaging in their residential compost collections.
- 83 councils offer Garden Organics waste services, meaning food waste goes to landfill.
- Only 1 council offers Food Organics waste services, meaning garden waste goes to landfill.
- Unfortunately, 313 councils (55%) don’t have access to any of the above organic bins. So, all their organic waste goes to landfill unless they can compost it at home.
Urge your councils to champion composting and accept compostable packaging in FOGO to help combat climate change by signing the Compost for Climate petition.
We’re calling for better access to composting information, more investment in composting infrastructure, and initiatives to encourage composting.
We believe our councils can and should do more to promote and support composting efforts.
Sign this petition if you think your council should:
- Implement Food Organics & Garden Organics (FOGO) waste collections for both residents and businesses where not already available
- Provide clear guidance on the correct disposal of recyclable and compostable items, such as bin stickers and info packs
- Offer better access to home composting resources and solutions
Invest in industrial composting infrastructure - Launch initiatives that encourage and facilitate composting in the community
Together, we can reduce our impact on climate change through responsible waste management. Let’s push our councils to step up and lead the way!

Why composting?
- Food waste in landfill produces 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. When organic matter decomposes in landfill it creates methane, a greenhouse gas around 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
- In Australia, in 2020-21, we sent 2.96 million tonnes of packaging to landfill. If all this packaging was recycled, we could have reduced Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions by about 2.2 million tonnes.
But, there’s a simple solution to food and packaging waste - composting.
Compost for Climate is inspired by New Research Into Australian Consumer Composting Behaviors
While it’s widely recognised that composting is a way to reduce this food waste problem by turning it into a nutrient-rich resource – there has been very limited research into the average Australian’s views on composting.
- Do Australians compost?
- Do Australians see the value in it?
- And do Australians understand what the composting logos mean?
New research shows that the majority of Australians want to dispose of their packaging correctly, yet logo confusion and a lack of council support remain a challenge. Here are the key insights:
- 70% of Australians place high importance on disposing of items in the correct council provided bin.
- One third of Australians claim to undertake composting (majority backyard) and over half of Australians express interest in home composting in the future.
- Almost half of Australians (45%) believe that cost-of-living does not impact their ability to prioritise recycling or composting.
- Only 1 in 5 Australians believe their council makes composting easy for them.
- Only 1 in 10 Australians were able to recognise the industrially compostable and home compostable logos – few people understood the true meaning of the logos.
- 70% of respondents state they will now look for these compostable logos on the packaging of everyday items.
