“Calling for the Immediate Removal and Strict Regulation of Online Scatter Gamble”
The Issue
Online scatter gambling has become increasingly accessible across the Philippines due to the widespread use of mobile phones and digital payment systems. What was once limited to regulated physical establishments can now be accessed at any time, often with minimal safeguards. This easy accessibility has raised serious concerns about its impact on vulnerable sectors of society, particularly the youth and low-income families. Many individuals are drawn in by aggressive advertising and the promise of quick financial gain, only to suffer significant financial losses. Reports of mounting debts, strained family relationships, and declining work or academic performance have become more common. The addictive nature of online gambling platforms further worsens the problem, as users are encouraged to continue playing despite repeated losses. Although regulatory bodies exist, enforcement against illegal or loosely monitored platforms remains inconsistent. The current system does not appear sufficient to fully protect the public from the social and economic consequences of online scatter gambling. Stronger oversight, clearer policies, and stricter implementation of existing laws are urgently needed. Without decisive action, the continued spread of online scatter gambling may cause deeper harm to Filipino families and communities.
