Call on Trump to Allow Democratic Elections in Venezuela

Call on Trump to Allow Democratic Elections in Venezuela
The Issue
Right now, the future of Venezuela’s democracy hangs in the balance.
After the U.S.-led military operation that ousted Nicolás Maduro from power, Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado—a longtime advocate for free elections—has arrived in Washington to meet with President Donald Trump and ask for one thing: support for democratic elections.
But so far, President Trump has backed Delcy Rodríguez, a Maduro regime official now acting as interim president with U.S. approval. This means the same unelected insiders from a failed regime are being allowed to hold power—without giving Venezuelans the right to vote on who leads their country.
This is not what democracy looks like.
According to reporting from NBC News, Machado is hoping to persuade Trump to help usher in elections and allow the Venezuelan people to choose their next leader freely and fairly. She has broad support across Venezuela and led the opposition coalition that won elections in 2024 before being forced into hiding.
We are calling on President Trump and the U.S. State Department to:
- Publicly support free, transparent, internationally monitored elections in Venezuela as soon as safely possible;
- Cease recognition of any unelected government not backed by the Venezuelan people;
- And support efforts to rebuild Venezuela through legitimate democratic institutions—not temporary appointees.
President Trump has claimed credit for ending authoritarian regimes. Now is the moment to finish the job with democracy—not delay it.
The people of Venezuela deserve more than handpicked successors. They deserve the chance to vote.
Sign this petition if you agree: Tell President Trump to support free elections in Venezuela and empower the people—not the regime.
