Call on the Vatican to publicly give voice to mass violence against minorities in Syria

Call on the Vatican to publicly give voice to mass violence against minorities in Syria
The Issue
Since April 2025, Syria has experienced a sharp escalation of violence marked by mass killings, executions, and the destruction of places of worship and villages, disproportionately affecting religious and ethnic minorities, including Christians, Alawites, Druze, and Kurdish populations.
Local sources, humanitarian networks, and independent observers have documented deliberate attacks on civilians, including summary executions, beheadings, arson attacks on villages, the burning of homes and places of worship, and the forced displacement of entire communities. These acts have occurred in areas under the control or influence of forces associated with the Syrian authorities and allied armed groups.
At the same time, the security situation has further deteriorated with the re-emergence of extremist networks, increasing the risk to civilians and minorities already under threat.
While Catholic humanitarian organizations continue to provide vital assistance on the ground, aid alone does not ensure visibility, accountability, or protection. Victims of mass violence are not only deprived of safety, but also of a public voice.
Despite the gravity of these events, Vatican media coverage has remained intermittent, fragmented, and largely abstract, lacking sustained attention, systematic documentation, and clear amplification of minority testimonies. There is no regular reporting framework, no centralized information space, and no consistent public witness proportional to the scale of the violence.
The Holy See has repeatedly affirmed that silence in the face of grave injustice allows suffering to continue unseen.
This petition does not call for political alignment or partisan judgment. It calls for moral clarity and public witness.
We therefore respectfully urge the Vatican and its media institutions to:
- Establish regular, visible, and sustained public reporting on mass violence affecting religious and ethnic minorities in Syria.
- Systematically amplify first-hand testimonies, local Church voices, and credible on-the-ground documentation.
- Create a dedicated and continuously updated information space focused on civilian protection, minority safety, and accountability.
- Ensure that the suffering of all communities - Christian and non-Christian alike - is acknowledged with clarity, dignity, and urgency.
The Church has long taught that every human life has equal worth, and that indifference is never neutral. Giving voice to those subjected to mass violence is not an act of politics - it is an act of responsibility.
We ask the Vatican to speak clearly, consistently, and publicly, so that these communities are no longer invisible.
