The Issue

The City of Bakersfield is home to over 84,000 immigrants.

Day after day, we read headlines about how the federal government is attacking our friends, our family, and our neighbors through the channels of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This must end now.

The City of Bakersfield has the authority to enact a "sanctuary city" policy, which would forbid the Bakersfield Police Department by law*  from coordinating with federal immigration enforcement. Further, it would enforce the prohibition of ICE enforcement, without a judicial warrant, at certain city-owned properties.

We recognize that the Bakersfield Police Department has publicly stated that they will not coordinate with these federal agencies, and we commend that. A verbal agreement is not protection for our immigrant communities in times like these.

The policy has been drafted to reflect policies that have been implemented in cities across California. You can view the full proposed resolution here
