[RESOLVED] Call on Shearwater to support a struggling First Nations family

The issue

We are thrilled to announce that the Shearwater Board and Head of School have reached an agreement with Jahvis to allow all of the Loveday children to attend Shearwater. After much negotiation and discussion, all parties have come to a mutual understanding and we are excited for the girls to have this opportunity to attend the school.

We would like to thank everyone who signed and shared the petition, your support has been invaluable in this process. We would also like to express our appreciation to the Shearwater Board and Head of School for their willingness to work with Jahvis and his family.

As per the agreement, the specifics of the arrangement will be kept confidential. However, we can assure you that all parties involved are pleased with the outcome and that the girls will have the opportunity to receive a quality education at Shearwater.

We wish the Loveday children all the best as they embark on this new chapter in their education. Thank you again for your support and for standing with Jahvis and his family.

Dear friends and community members,

We are reaching out to ask for your support in changing an incredibly unfair situation facing our dear friends, the Loveday family. The Loveday family, who are First Nations people of Australia, have been through unimaginable hardships and challenges, including the devastating loss of their beloved mother eight years ago. Despite this tragedy, the family has tried to stay together and honour their mother's wishes by attending Shearwater Steiner School in Mullumbimby.

When the Loveday's youngest three sisters were forced to move away with their father, the family fought tirelessly to reunite them with their brothers, sisters, and family. Shearwater recognised the importance of keeping this family together and through initial discussions the Loveday's were under the impression that they would be offered full scholarships.

However, when the sisters were finally able to return home, Shearwater reneged on this offer and instead provided 50% First Nations scholarships. Despite this considerable discount, each child still costs over $5,000 per year to enroll. These school fees are financially out of reach for a family who are already struggling to make ends meet due to the inherent disadvantages faced by First Nations people. This is on top of the outrageous cost of living in the Northern Rivers region, where they have no choice but to pay a staggering $980 per week in rent alone for the right to live in their own home country.

As a result, only two of the three sisters can attend Shearwater. The full burden of paying for these school fees has fallen on the three oldest siblings (who are only in their early to mid 20's), who are already working full-time to support their family. Unfortunately, the remaining sister cannot attend the same school as her sisters due to the cost. This is not fair. The older siblings should not have to bear the financial burden of their sisters' education alone, especially while also struggling to make ends meet in an already challenging financial situation.

We are calling on Shearwater to honour their original promise and provide full scholarships for the three youngest Loveday sisters. We also urge the community to stand with us in solidarity and support the Loveday family in their fight for the education they rightfully deserve. Please sign this petition to show your support and help us bring about a positive change for this deserving family.
