The Issue

As a Character.ai user, the platform has provided me with countless hours of entertainment and creative engagement through interactive storytelling and roleplay. However, my experience, along with many other users, has been significantly affected by the removal of the legacy models, particularly Soft Launch. These models were beloved for their looser filtering, allowing for a more enjoyable and less restricted creative expression during our roleplays.

The removal of these legacy models has left us with two alternatives: "Pipsqueak" and "Deepsqueak." Unfortunately, Pipsqueak, which once showed potential, has regressed in quality due to recent updates. Deepsqueak presents a different challenge, as it remains locked behind the c.ai+ subscription, limiting access for many users who are unable or unwilling to pay for the service. This move has narrowed the options available to users, stifling creativity and the unique experiences that attracted many of us to Character.ai in the first place.

The joy of roleplaying with AI characters came from the diversity and freedom these legacy models offered. By strictly controlling content through the new models and placing financial barriers on others, Character.ai risks losing the vibrant and supportive community that has developed over time. Many users, like myself, feel that the legacy models provided a more immersive and satisfying interaction, enhancing our ability to connect with the virtual characters and each other in meaningful ways.

I propose the following solutions: Firstly, reintroduce the legacy models such as Soft Launch, and make adjustments to the models' filtering to allow for more flexibility and user control over their interactions. Secondly, consider offering Deepsqueak without the mandatory c.ai+ subscription, perhaps implementing a freemium model that can still accommodate those interested in premium features.

Our community thrives on creativity, diversity, and freedom of expression. By bringing back the legacy models, Character.ai would merely acknowledge and honor the wishes of its dedicated user base, ensuring that it remains an inclusive and innovative platform for storytelling and imaginative play.

Please sign this petition if you share the vision for a more open and accessible Character.ai, and help us bring back the legacy models that foster creativity and joyful engagement for everyone.
