The Issue

Since 2020, there have been at least 580 women and girls killed by men in acts of gender-related violence across Canada. This is called femicide. We, the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability (CFOJA), are calling on the Canadian Federal Government to officially recognize femicide and to work toward including femicide in the Criminal Code of Canada.

To spotlight the scale of this crisis, we created Too True Crime, a 580-episode podcast series sharing the real stories of every woman and girl we know of who has been killed by femicide in Canada since 2020. Each episode honours a life taken, revealing the relentless regularity of femicide in this country. All 580 episodes are available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Too True Crime is a solemn, undeniable record of these lives taken, and a call for Canada to confront femicide with the urgency it demands.

"Sharing my mother's story was difficult, but I did it because her life mattered. Too True Crime acknowledges the women we've lost and makes sure their deaths are not ignored. I'm grateful for a project that refuses to let these tragedies be overlooked." - Tara Graham, who voiced Episode #513: Brenda, Killed Oct 18, 2024.

We urge the Canadian Federal Government to take definitive and decisive action by officially recognizing femicide and to work toward including femicide in the Criminal Code of Canada. This is the first step in preventing violence against women and girls.

This petition invites you to act now. Sign today to advocate for all women and girls in Canada, to remember the lives taken, and to catalyze change that helps create a safer future for generations to come. Signing this petition moves us one step closer to enacting meaningful change.
