Call for the UK Military to Prioritize Humanitarian Aid and Better Support for Veterans

The Issue

We, the undersigned, call on the UK Government and Ministry of Defence to make vital changes that will transform the role of the UK military and ensure that the people who serve are genuinely supported, both during and after their service.

The UK military, including the Royal Navy and Armed Forces, plays a critical role in global security, but its mission can be expanded to make a meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of people around the world.

We believe that:

1. Humanitarian Aid Should Be a Core Focus: The UK military has a unique opportunity to use its resources and presence in Commonwealth countries and conflict zones to help fight issues like human trafficking, child sex trafficking, poverty, and lack of education. The military should not only be focused on defense, but also on long-term humanitarian efforts that can bring lasting change to the communities they serve. This shift would inspire young people to join, knowing they are contributing to something much greater than military conflict.

2. Veterans Must Be Given Lifelong Support: Too many veterans struggle with mental health issues, unemployment, and a lack of resources after leaving the military. We call for the UK military to provide better care for veterans, including comprehensive mental health services, housing support, and career training. After dedicating years of service, veterans deserve to be supported for the rest of their lives.

3. Military Service Should Offer Meaningful Benefits: If the UK military is truly invested in the well-being of its personnel, we propose that service members receive better long-term benefits. This could include debt relief such as covering mortgages and bills for several years after service, healthcare, education opportunities, and job placement support, helping those who risk their lives secure a better future.

4. Strengthen Global Partnerships: In times of conflict, the military should not just be seen as an instrument of war, but as a partner in the development and well-being of Commonwealth nations. By focusing on development projects, infrastructure, and supporting ethical governance in countries that need it most, the UK military can foster trust and loyalty, making it more likely that these countries would stand together in times of conflict. This would also boost international trade relations and contribute to global stability.

5. Engaging the Younger Generation: A generation of young people is increasingly looking for careers that offer purpose and a chance to make a meaningful impact. By prioritizing humanitarian aid, ethical military action, and better support for veterans, the UK military could inspire the younger generation to join, knowing they are contributing to the world in a positive and lasting way.

We believe that by incorporating these changes, the UK military would not only attract new recruits but also become a force for good in the world—creating stronger, more ethical international partnerships, and ensuring that those who serve are well taken care of.

We urge the UK Government and Ministry of Defence to take immediate action and make these changes a reality.
