After awaiting trial in prision for 5 years and 156 days of court, Jimmy Lai Chee Ying, a British citizen, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on 9th Feb 2026 for "conspiring to collude with foreign forces and conspiracy to publish seditious materials."

He is already 78 years of age and this sentence is equivalent to a life-sentence. If nothing is done he will likely die in prison.

The international community continues to voice their dissent for Lai's situation but nothing concrete is done, for now we will need something akin to a miracle to see Lai's release early.
