Call for Safe and Healthy Bra Design: Protect Women's Health

Call for Safe and Healthy Bra Design: Protect Women's Health
The Issue
We, the undersigned, call for urgent global attention to an overlooked issue:
the physical harm caused to millions of women worldwide by poorly designed, ill-fitting, and restrictive bras.
The Problem:
Based on numerous international studies published in medical and health journals:
- Over 80% of women wear bras that do not fit properly. This contributes to chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain, and can negatively impact posture and overall musculoskeletal health.
Bras that are too tight or have underwires often restrict lymphatic circulation, cause skin irritation, breathing discomfort, and can lead to long-term physical stress.
Most commercial bras are designed with little consideration for real women’s bodies, comfort, or the long-term effects on their physical well-being.
Our Demands:
We respectfully urge the following actions:
- That the World Health Organization (WHO) develop and publish international health-based guidelines for bra design, to prevent harm and promote body-safe support for women and girls.
- That the global fashion industry and designers work in collaboration with health professionals, orthopedists, and women themselves, to create bras that support natural anatomy and movement without causing discomfort or long-term harm.
- That bra manufacturers be required to:
Include clear health warnings for prolonged use of overly tight or restrictive bras;
Provide accurate sizing guides and fitting tools accessible to all body types. - That funding and research priorities include medical and ergonomic studies on how bra use affects long-term women’s health—particularly among marginalized and underrepresented populations.
We demand a shift from aesthetic pressure to body respect.
A woman’s body deserves comfort.
It deserves dignity.
And it deserves undergarments that support her health—not compromise it.
