Call for Review of Academic Integrity Policy at Georgia Institute of Technology
The Issue
Georgia Institute of Technology is a leading university & its academic integrity policies would benefit from a review to ensure fairness and support for students' learning.
Strict academic integrity policies are necessary to uphold standards of honesty and fairness. In practise though, they often wrongfully condemn students, creating an environment of unjustness & fear instead of learning & growth.
The use of automated detection tools, such as Turnitin, while helpful in detecting potential issues, also overlooks important context & intent. This results in false positives - for instance, when common phrases, textbook knowledge, question formatting & properly cited materials are flagged as plagiarism.
The process for standing up against an academic integrity accusation is a gruelling one, where students are treated as “guilty until proven innocent”. When flagged, students are presumed guilty and must prove their innocence, often with little support or guidance.
Additionally, for courses such as “CS 6515 Graduate Algorithms” taken towards the end of the degree program, students face an impossible dilemma: either accept the accusation in order to graduate or appeal the accusation which delays graduation and incurs high opportunity costs. Since the appeal process stretches up to months, delayed graduation also delays entry to the workforce, directly impacting students’ livelihoods.
The psychological toll on students cannot be understated. Students facing wrongful accusations of academic integrity violation often experience significant stress from feelings of helplessness & unfairness at the situation.
Moreover, when students are failed due to academic integrity policies, they retake the course to meet degree requirements, generating additional tuition revenue for the institution. This creates a conflict of interest, where the policies meant to uphold academic integrity can be used to unfairly extend a student’s academic journey, thereby increasing the institution’s income.
We call on Georgia Institute of Technology to refine its academic integrity policies by ensuring that all allegations are evaluated fairly - with human oversight, considering context, intent and students' broader academic behavior.
In this way, universities can adopt a more nuanced approach — one that upholds integrity while also fostering a supportive academic environment.
