WHY BREAST DENSITY MATTERS! 

Mammograms detect some cancers but are not as effective on women with dense breast tissue. 

Dense breasts are normal and common but women with dense breasts need more than a mammogram as cancers can 'hide' behind dense breast tissue.  In many countries, at a routine mammogram appointment, if dense breasts are assessed, then it is standard practice to offer the woman additional screening, such as an ultrasound examination. 

European Society of Breast Imaging now recommends MRI screening for women with 'extremely dense breasts'. This has not yet been implemented as guidelines.
