Call for Judicial Removal Against CCSD District E Trustee Lorena Biassotti for Malfeasance
The Issue
We are IOV (@iceoutvegas), a student-led organization in Las Vegas dedicated to informing students about ICE activity and other harmful actions perpetrated by the Trump Administration. We are calling for judicial removal proceedings against CCSD District E Trustee Lorena Biassotti because of repeated derogatory statements that target transgender students, as well as her public support for ICE activity within Las Vegas, including our schools.
Biassotti, who co-founded the Clark County chapter for far-right group "Moms for Liberty" before withdrawing prior to being elected, has compared gender dysphoria to pedophilia, claimed that transgender girls are simply “boys pretending,” and publicly supported efforts to remove policies that protect transgender students in schools. These aren't just minor disagreements about policy positions or political views, these are derogatory public statements that directly question the legitimacy and safety of a marginalized community, which many students are apart of. LGBTQ+ students are put at risk by a supposed “representative”, who actively campaigns to strip them of their rights and identities. A CCSD trustee is an elected official and a representative of the entire community, so why should a public servant be allowed to publicly demonize a marginalized group of students and still remain in office?
Biasotti's unexpected "withdrawal" from Moms for Liberty isn't a change of heart, but rather an effort to clear her slate and remove any controversial affiliations, especially as her longstanding Twitter/X activity under the Moms for Liberty Clark County account (@M4LClark) promotes anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, racism, banning books & other forms of censorship, and xenophobia. Recently, the Clark County Chapter for Moms for Liberty has also targeted Rancho HS teacher & Nevada State Assemblyman Reuben D'Silva, accusing him of "encouraging" students to participate in school walkouts and other forms of protest. However, D’Silva has publicly stated that he has never encouraged any student to walk out, but instead has supported their First Amendment right to peacefully protest-- something Moms for Liberty should support, considering the “liberty” in their name. Ironically, on January 30th, Biasotti was shown on record at an East Las Vegas Town Hall promoting ICE activity, in which D'Silva was refuting her claims, even criticizing her for not serving her country as he did, despite him once being an illegal immigrant. This is not just a coincidence, D'Silva is being unfairly targeted by a group whom Biasotti co-founded-- just days after she was publicly criticized by him.
The impact of these statements goes beyond "harmful rhetoric". The students affected are the same students who must live and continue going to school under the policies that a trustee helps implement. LGBTQ+ students already experience higher rates of bullying, harassment, anxiety, depression, and even suicide. Hearing a public official describe them in such a dismissive and harmful way, and even comparing them to a PEDOPHILE can make school feel less safe, less welcoming, and can even take a toll on one's mental health.
A school board trustee is meant to represent every student in the district, not use their platform to speak against a vulnerable group and target others who have different opinions than them. Because of these repeated statements and her alignment with policies that threaten the well-being of LGBTQ+ students, we believe Trustee Biassotti is not acting in the best interests of all students in CCSD. For these reasons, we are calling for judicial removal proceedings for malfeasance under Nevada law NRS 283.440.
