Call for Investigation Into Potential Iranian Regime Connections of Ehsan Nobakht
The Issue
We, members of the Iranian diaspora and supporters of freedom and human rights, respectfully call for a transparent review of potential connections between individuals living in the United States and officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
According to publicly available records, Dr. Ehsan Nobakht — currently based in Washington, D.C. and affiliated with George Washington University — is the son of Ali Nobakht, who has previously held positions within institutions of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including parliamentary and health-sector roles.
For more than four decades, the Iranian regime has been responsible for widespread human-rights abuses, political repression, and violence against its own citizens. Millions of Iranians have been forced into exile while regime-connected elites have often enjoyed access to Western institutions, financial systems, and educational opportunities.
This petition does not presume wrongdoing by Dr. Nobakht. However, given the documented positions held by members of his immediate family within the governing structure of the Islamic Republic, we believe it is reasonable and appropriate to request further transparency.
We respectfully call for:
1. A review of any potential financial or institutional ties between individuals connected to Iranian regime officials and entities operating in the United States.
2. Transparency regarding affiliations and funding sources where individuals connected to regime figures hold positions in U.S. academic or professional institutions.
3. Assurance that U.S. residency privileges are not being misused by individuals who may have financial or institutional ties to officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
4. Protection of the integrity of American institutions, ensuring they are not used to indirectly benefit networks linked to authoritarian governments.
Millions of Iranians continue to risk their lives demanding freedom, democracy, and accountability. The international community — including institutions in the United States — must ensure that their systems are not inadvertently enabling individuals connected to regimes responsible for oppression.
Transparency and accountability are essential to maintaining public trust.
We therefore urge the appropriate authorities and institutions to conduct a fair and transparent review.
Signed,
Supporters of freedom, human rights, and democratic accountability for the Iranian people.
