The Issue

Turks & Caicos’ Hon. Premier Washington Misick has ‘unveiled’ plans for a $177m maritime mega-project. But at what cost? This project not only risks irreversible damage to our vibrant marine biodiversity but also endangers the very fabric of our community's way of life. While billed as an economic boon, it stands to threaten the livelihoods of those who depend on fishing and tourism, undermine coastal protection, and diminish the island's resilience in the face of climate change.

The coral reefs surrounding Grand Turk are more than just natural wonders; they are vital living systems that shield our shores from violent storms, support local businesses through tourism and fisheries, and sustain a diverse range of marine life. Once these ecosystems are destroyed, they cannot simply be replaced or rebuilt. Coral reefs take decades, even centuries, to form and are essential for the balance of life in our oceans. This development threatens this balance by proposing construction that would extend the existing cargo dock to the barrier reef and build a cruise dock on the reef crest. This is within an established protected area, and critical migration corridor for North Atlantic whales, further endangering vulnerable species.

The potential economic benefits touted by the government do not outweigh the grave environmental and social costs. There are alternative solutions that can provide economic growth while preserving our natural heritage. We can invest in sustainable tourism projects that highlight our unique marine environment and attract conscientious visitors who wish to experience the beauty of an intact coral reef ecosystem. We can also explore eco-friendly infrastructure improvements that respect the surrounding environment and support local industries without devastating our natural defenses and biodiversity.

We call upon the government and stakeholders to reconsider this project and prioritize sustainable development that respects and preserves our natural environment. By doing so, we can ensure that Grand Turk remains a vibrant, beautiful, and prosperous place for generations to come. I urge you to join us in protecting our island's future by signing this petition. Together, we can advocate for a development plan that honors both our community and our environment, promoting resilience rather than destruction. Please sign and share this petition to help stop this destructive development.
