call for closure of Islamic Republic's embassy in Finland

Arvoisa ulkoministeri Haavisto,

 

Kuten tiedätte, viimeisen kolmen kuukauden aikana Iranin kansalaiset ovat nousseet vallankumoukseen Ali Khameinin brutaalia diktatuuria vastaan. Siitä saakka kun – ironisesti nimetty – moraalipoliisi aiheutti Mahsa (Jina) Aminin kuoleman, maassa on nähty protesteja ja lakkoja monissa kaupungeissa, yliopistoissa, tehtaissa ja markkinapaikoilla. Näihin laillisiin protesteihin on vastattu hallinnon, erikoisjoukkojen ja puolisotilaallisten joukkojen (Baseej) toimesta voimakeinoin ja rauhanomaisia mielenosoittajia on ammuttu, hakattu sekä pidätetty. Monia kiinniotettuja on kidutettu ja, tähän mennessä, kaksi mielenosoittajaa on teloitettu kyseenalaisten oikeusprosessien päätteeksi, joissa syytetyiltä on evätty mahdollisuus asianmukaiseen puolustukseen tai puolustuspuheevuoroihin.

 

Julkisuuteen nousseet todisteet kasvattavat huolta siitä, että yhä useampien ihmisten riski tulla teloitetuksi kasvaa, elleivät poliitikot, kuten te, aloita välittömästi toimenpiteitä. Suomi on alusta asti selkeästi vastustanut Iranin toimia, mistä olemme todella kiitollisia. Uskomme kuitenkin, että Suomen, vapaan maailman johtavana edustajana sekä Euroopan Unionin jäsenenä, tulisi tehdä konkreettisempia toimia Iranin hallinnon tekemiä ihmisoikeusrikkomuksia vastaan, jotka ovat luoneet tämän humanitaarisen kriisin. Täten vaadimme, että Iranin islamilaisen tasavallan suurlähetystö Suomessa on suljettava sekä puollamme vastaavien toimien kohdistamista myös muihin Iranin lähetystöihin ja edustajistoihin ympäri EU:n.

 

Lisäksi vaadimme, että käynnissä olevat neuvottelut Iranin nykyhallinnon kanssa keskeytetään; hallinnon, joka pitää valtiota, sen kansalaisia ja resursseja panttivankinaan saavuttaakseen epäoikeudenmukaiset ja epäinhimilliset tavoitteensa. Iranin kansalaiset vaarantavat henkensä saadakseen äänensä kuuluviin sivistynein ja rauhanomaisin keinoin. Nykyhallinto on menettänyt legitimiteettinsä, eikä se toisin sanoen edusta kansaa, kuten ei myöskään diplomaattiedustajisto.

 

Tämä on vetoomus tunnustaa iranilaisten aito tarve luoda itselleen, lapsilleen sekä maalleen kunnollinen tulevaisuus. Tällainen tunnustus ei voi toteutua ilman, että maan tämänhetkisten johtajien ja Iranin kansan välille tehdään selkeä ero. On sanomattakin selvää, että ilman tällaisen erottelun selväksi tekemistä, hallinto tulkitsee saavansa kansainvälisen legitimiteetin, jonka rohkaisemana se jatkaa kansalaisten ja mielenosoittajien sortamista.

 

Tämä ei ole enää poliittinen kysymys. Se on kääntynyt humanitaariseksi kriisiksi, ja hallinto suorittaa rikoksia ihmisyyttä vastaan. Me, Iranin kansalaiset, olemme nousseet tätä diktatuurista hallintoa vastaan, ja se on oikea ja hyväksyttävä seuraus. Olemme varmoja, että Suomi haluaa asettua oikealle puolelle ja osoittaa sen kuuntelemalla heitä.

His Excellency Mr Haaviso,

As you are well aware, during the past 3 months the Iranian people have started a revolution against the brutal dictatorship in Iran headed by Ali Khamenei. Since the tragic death of Mahsa (Jina) Amini by the -ironically-called- morality police, the country has witnessed protests and strikes in many cities, universities, factories, and markets. These lawful protests have been responded to with heavy force from the government, special forces, and civilian paramilitary forces (the Baseej) shooting, beating, and arresting peaceful demonstrators. Many of the detainees have been subjected to torture, and so far, two have been executed through questionable legal procedures wherein the accused were denied legal representation or the right to render their final defences. There is growing concern over the evidence brought to pubic that there is still a great risk of more people to be executed if urgent measures are not taken by politicians like you. Finland has practised a firm stand about the events going on in Iran from its inception, for which we are grateful. However, we believe that Finland, as a leading member of the free world and a powerful member of the European Union, should make more tangible actions regarding the human rights violations in Iran at the hands of the regime, which has created this humanitarian crisis. We would like to call for the closure of the Islamic Republic’s embassy in Finland and advocate for the similar actions towards its other embassies and representations throughout the EU. Moreover, we hereby call for the halt of any ongoing negotiations with the current regime in Iran, a regime that has taken the country, its people, and resources hostage for its unjust and inhumane aims. The people of Iran have been risking their lives to make their voices heard in the most civilised and peaceful manner. This regime has lost its legitimacy, i.e., the regime does not represent its people and their diplomatic representations do not either, by the same token. This is a call to recognise the Iranians’ decent move towards making a decent future for themselves, their children, and their country. Such recognition cannot happen without making a distinction between the people and the current rulers of Iran. It goes without saying that the absence of such a distinction will be interpreted by the current regime as the sign of international legitimacy thereby emboldening them to purse with more repression and violence against demonstrators. This is no loner a political issue. It turned to a humanitarian crisis and this regime is conducing crime against humanity. We, the Iranian people, have stood up against this dictator regime, and that is a correct and decent cause. We are sure Finland prefers to exercise standing by the correct side through hearing them out.
