The Issue

In recent years, the educational focus has shifted towards academic rigor, often at the expense of valuable social/emotional development and free play time for students. However, research consistently underscores the benefits of recess for children’s physical, emotional, and cognitive development, making it imperative for all public schools from kindergarten through 12th grade to implement 30 minutes of outdoor recess each day. Recess is a critical component of a well-rounded education, providing students a necessary break from the structured learning environment.

Scientific studies highlight that regular recess contributes to lower stress levels, enhanced creative thinking, and improved academic performance. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, recess not only offers physical benefits but also promotes social skills, such as cooperation, negotiation, and conflict resolution. Furthermore, recess complements physical education by letting students choose activities that interest them, fostering a lifelong appreciation for active living.

To make this possible in grades 7-12 without extending the school day, existing class periods can be shortened by just 4-5 minutes. This small adjustment ensures that students still receive their full curriculum without compromising their well-being. During days of inclement weather, suitable indoor accommodations should be made to enable children to engage in physical activities and social interactions, ensuring that the benefits of unstructured play are not lost.

Implementing mandatory recess time not only addresses the physical health issues arising from sedentary lifestyles but also tackles the significant issue of student mental health by providing a space for stress relief and expression. Given the current levels of student anxiety and depression, providing daily breaks is essential. Teachers and administrators will also receive the benefits of spending time outdoors.

By signing this petition, you are urging the school board and educational policymakers to recognize the undisputed importance of unstructured play for student health and academic success. Please help us take these crucial steps towards prioritizing the holistic development of our children. Sign this petition to require all K-12 public schools in Baldwin County to allocate 30 minutes for outdoor recess every school day.
