The Issue

Honourable members of the European Parliament, Her Excellency Ms. Roberta Metsola,

We urgently call for the immediate de-escalation and cease-fire in Gaza to end the current wave of violence indiscriminately affecting civilians. With a death toll of more than 3,500 people and more than 12,000 injured - the majority of which include babies, young children, women, the elderly, families, aid workers, doctors and journalists - this conflict must come to an end.

We are further requesting you to immediately call for unimpeded humanitarian assistance to be allowed into Gaza. 2.2 million Gazans are at risk due to the incessant bombardments, the lack of water, food, electricity, fuel and medication. We are watching a humanitarian catastrophe unfold before our eyes, and if the siege is not ended soon, thousands of additional innocent civilian lives will be lost.

Finally, we urge you to call on all parties to uphold international humanitarian law, and to stop the targeting of civilians. You have unequivocally condemned Hamas for the killing of civilians, and for taking civilians as hostages. Now it is time to also unequivocally condemn Israel for killing civilians, destroying civilian infrastructure, and forcibly displacing 1 million people - acts serving as a collective punishment on the people of Gaza, which may well amount to ethnic cleansing or genocide. It is high time that the suffering of the Palestinian people is acknowledged and that such heinous acts are condemned.

Continuing to shed light on what happens in Gaza is not sufficient. Innocent civilians are being killed on a daily basis, medical facilities are completely overwhelmed and cannot cope with the large amount of injured people. On the 17th October, the Al-Ahli Arab hospital was bombed, killing hundreds of civilians who were seeking medical assistance or simply a place of shelter and safety. We cannot stand by and watch. We must take a stance!

As the European Parliament, you are directly elected by the citizens of European member states. You represent us. We are now asking you to use the significant diplomatic power that you hold to put a halt to this conflict. We do not want to be complicit in this massacre, and should not have to be!

We urge you to do right by humanity. It is time to save lives now.
