Call for a Royal Commission into the Mental Health Crisis in Australia

The issue

This Petition is in Honour of Shae Quinzel - Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15 to 49. Behind every statistic is a story cut tragically short, a family left to grapple with unimaginable grief, and a community mourning the loss of one of its own. Each of these individuals deserved a chance at better care, at understanding, and at life. Yet, our current mental health services are failing them when they need help the most. We cannot and must not accept this as the norm.

Every day, nine people in Australia lose their lives to suicide. This staggering figure doesn't even account for the "deliberate accidents," where intent cannot be clearly documented, but is heavily suspected. This reality stands as a testament to the urgent need for comprehensive reform in our mental health system.

A Royal Commission into Mental Health Services in Australia is not just important—it is essential. A Royal Commission would provide the necessary accountability and transparency to study our current system in detail. By doing so, it can highlight where services are falling short and what can be done to improve outcomes for those who are the most vulnerable.

The Royal Commission must examine critical areas such as accessibility to mental health services, the adequacy of funding and resources, the effectiveness of current treatment methods, and how mental health professionals are trained and supported. It should include voices from survivors of mental illness, mental health professionals, and those who have lost loved ones to ensure a comprehensive approach.

Furthermore, by implementing the actionable recommendations of a Royal Commission, we can create a pathway to build a more effective mental health system. A system that ensures early intervention, provides ample support, and ultimately saves lives.

Together, we can make a difference. We owe it to every person who was let down by the system and to those who are still fighting their own battles. Let's put mental health where it deserves to be—at the forefront of national attention. Join us in calling for a Royal Commission into mental health services in Australia. Sign this petition and be part of the change that is so desperately needed.
