Call for a Publicly Owned Bike Hire Scheme in Edinburgh

The Issue

Edinburgh faces pressing challenges with traffic congestion, air quality, and limited transport choices for those who can’t afford or prefer not to use a car. Although cycling has grown in popularity, many residents find it difficult to own, maintain, or safely park a bicycle. A publicly owned bike hire scheme would make cycling more convenient, expand mobility options, and help the city meet its net-zero targets by reducing car usage and carbon emissions.

Cities around the world have shown that accessible, affordable bike hire networks can cut traffic, lower pollution, and improve health and wellbeing for local communities. Public ownership ensures these benefits are shared by everyone, not driven by private profit. It also allows better integration with other forms of transport, enabling the city to place docking stations in under-served areas and tailor the scheme to local needs.

Edinburgh has committed to reducing car journeys by 30% by 2030, but progress has been slow. A publicly owned bike hire system would significantly advance this goal by offering a reliable, community-focused alternative to driving. It would also demonstrate the city’s commitment to equitable, forward-thinking infrastructure at a time when investment in sustainable travel is urgently needed.

By signing this petition, you call on the Council to prioritise a publicly owned bike hire scheme. A publicly owned model would keep costs fair, routes extensive, and control firmly in the hands of the community.

Add your name to show your support for bringing a city-run bike hire network to Edinburgh. Together, we can make our streets safer, our air cleaner, and our transport system more inclusive for all.
