Gregg Blue and Jonathon Lane met with the Mayor and the Department of Public Works April 21 about defective speed tables. The mayor listened! The next day he placed a moratorium on new speed tables (https://www.mauicounty.gov/m/newsflash/Home/Detail/18733 The speed tables were approved under a previous administration and Mr. Bissen is working to correct the issue and include the community in the process.
Based on our research, we believe that the speed tables were not properly installed and are defective. The contractor delivered a defective product and the County did not verify that they were built according to the engineering plans. A correctly engineered speed table is designed so that you can drive over it at the posted speed limit. If the limit is 30 miles an hour there should be no serious impact on your vehicle.
It seems that the leading edge (and other issues) of all of these speed tables is the wrong height and angle and that's why so many people have to slow down to about 10 miles an hour to safely cross them. We are getting many reports of front end suspension damage from the community. We understand the only way to correct these speed tables is to remove the existing ones and replace them with some other option that does not damage our cars and will return safety to our roads.
The county has scheduled a community meeting in Haiku at the Haiku Community Center on May 27 at 6:30 PM and representatives from various County departments will attend. There will be a presentation explaining exactly what has happened so that everybody understands how we got here. We want to thank the mayor for dealing with this issue in such a timely manner. We are hoping for a large turnout, so please spread the word so this important issue can be dealt with.
