RESTORE CALAFIA NAMESAKE: CALIFORNIA H.R. BILL FOR A NEW SEAL

The Issue

Calafia is a Black Amazonian Queen who commands an army of Black female Amazonian warriors. Arrayed in golden armor and straddling flying Griffins, this warrior and her constabulary is a legend popularized by Garcí Rodríguez de Montalvo in his book entitled, Las Sergas de Esplandian.  Although this dramatic and important character is the very source of the name California, many Californians, Americans and specifically African Americans do not know about Queen Calafia.  It is especially hurtful for People of Color due to our contribution in the American Enslavement Era that is uncorrected and continues to stand as a Confederate symbol of slavery - not of our royal birthright of liberty in the meaning of the name California. Yet, this is another historical inaccuracy that is not taught in schools.

We believe that the time for change is now. Now is the time to correct this major misrepresentation. Now is time for the truth to be acknowledged. We humbly ask that you join us NOW!

Our plan is simple, sign this petition asking the State of California to redesign The Great Seal of the State of California to accurately represent the portrait of Queen Calafia, the namesake of California.
