California just passed a law requiring schools to notify parents and staff when immigration enforcement shows up on campus.

It’s time for New York to do the same.

Right now, New York schools follow internal guidance that restricts ICE access—but there’s no law requiring schools to alert parents if immigration officers are present. That leaves immigrant families in the dark, and students at risk of panic, separation, or trauma in what should be a safe learning environment.

California’s law would:

Require public schools and colleges to notify families when immigration enforcement is on-site
Ban ICE from entering nonpublic school areas without a judicial warrant
Send a clear message: school is a safe zone, not a trap
 

We’re calling on the New York State Legislature and Governor Kathy Hochul to:

• Introduce and pass a bill replicating California’s alert law statewide
• Protect New York students and immigrant families from fear-based enforcement tactics
• Ensure that families are warned—not blindsided—if ICE arrives near schools
   

This is not about politics. It’s about basic communication, dignity, and child safety.
