What’s Happening Now at Our State Capitol?
- Over 180 trees in danger of loss, harm, or failure
- Tree removal has begun
- Historic East Annex to be demolished and replaced by expanded Glass Palace
- West Steps and West Plaza to be destroyed for Visitor Center
- Excavation on east side for an underground parking garage despite security concerns and available parking at 10th & O Streets
- $1.3 billion to be spent for this destructive plan
- Legislature moving forward while four legal actions against the Plan have been filed and are active
What’s wrong with this Capitol Annex Plan?
- 75% of likely California voters are OPPOSED TO THIS PLAN
- Destroys Historic State Capitol Annex
- Destroys or threatens over 180 trees
- Destroys West Steps and Plaza of Historic 1870 Capitol for visitor center and east side of Capitol for parking garage
- Decision made in secret by 3 person committee
- Legislature is ignoring Californians’ will and state and national preservation law
OUR PLAN
- Save the East Annex -- restore this historic building, at less cost
- No excavation in Capitol Park
- No loss of park trees
- Retain West Steps and Plaza as meeting space
- Use existing parking and office space in the “swing space” building at 10th and O Streets permanently – Legislature and Governor are located there now – in addition to renovated Annex
