The Capitol Annex – the mid-century masterpiece that is the east wing of the State Capitol and listed in the National Registry of Historic Places – is slated for demolition this year. Trees will be removed as soon as next month.

Can you sit by while this happens? If the State Capitol, the historic crown jewel of California, is demolished, then no historical building in this state is safe. Sadly, because the building was never properly maintained by the California Legislature, lawmakers and Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration plan to demolish this piece of history, to the tune of $1.4 billion, in order to build larger offices, while also constructing an underground parking garage exclusively for their use, and erecting a visitor center that would decimate the West Steps and more than 100 trees in Capitol Park.

So what can you do? Four lawsuits aim to stop the demolition. Opponents of the demolition have reached two-thirds of their fundraising goal to save the Capitol, but are seeking additional support. Any amount is appreciated, tax deductible, and will help efforts to save this important historic complex.

Please donate whatever you can to support these suits by clicking this link or by mailing a check to the California Capitol Historic Preservation Society: PO Box 188155, Sacramento, CA 95818.

Aside from the court cases, there are four people who could stop this historic nightmare. Text CAPITOL to 52886 or write to the following individuals:
