12 hour shifts for the California Highway Patrol

12 hour shifts for the California Highway Patrol
The Issue
In 2017, the human resources agency of California, CalHR directed the California Highway Patrol to cease allowing CHP Officers to work 12 hour shifts. CHP Officers were given the choice to work either 8 or 9 hour shifts after the change. The majority of law enforcement agencies in the nation work 12 hour shifts due to the efficiency and extra days off for LE personnel to recover from their stressful occupation. Additionally, CHP Public Safety Operators (dispatchers) are allowed to work 12 hours shifts. Allowing CHP Officers to return to 12 hour shifts will not only help alleviate fatigue but will increase the number of officers on patrol at any given time, increasing roadway safety and reducing the mileage death rate.
