Do you really want to know what some of our provincial government employees think about people with disabilities?
Because here’s a taste of what Roderick — a public servant working for Alberta’s Ministry of Jobs, Economy, Trade, and Immigration — had to say to me on LinkedIn, as a disabled woman who uses AI to help communicate clearly and process complex thoughts.
• “People with disabilities who rely on AI do so because they refuse to learn essential skills.”
• “Stop using neurodivergence as an excuse to be lazy.”
• “I’m neurodivergent too, and I don’t need AI because I learned to use my neurodivergence to my advantage.”
• “Too much dependence on automation leads to complacency.”
• “Adaptability means functioning with or without tools.”
• “Others with disabilities train themselves to adapt. So should you.”
• “If you can budget monthly expenses, then you can figure out how to communicate.”
• “You just need to practice harder.”
• And the kicker: “Are you struggling to write your ideas at a grade six level?”
This is a government employee speaking to a disabled woman about how she copes with her disability. And he wasn’t alone in this attitude. These are the same institutions implementing policies that impact our lives — and this is the mindset behind it.
If this disgusts you as much as it should, please sign and share the petition. This isn’t about smoking — it’s about human dignity, disability rights, and a system that continues to treat us like we’re disposable.
