Voice your Opinion on 3rd Addiction Treatment Centre in Altadore

Voice your Opinion on 3rd Addiction Treatment Centre in Altadore
The Issue
There is a proposed change in use from residential to an Addictions treatment centre at 4221 16 Street S.W. Permit number is DP2021-0948. This residence is 110m from the front door of Rundle Academy and 300m from Altadore Elementary.
The strongest point against this location is that it is within 300m of two other addiction facilities at 1937 and 1941 42nd Ave. This is contrary to B.9 of the City of Calgary, Planning Principles for the Location of Care Facilities and Shelters (2011) which states: “Concentration of care facilities and shelters in an area should be avoided. Where a care facility or shelter is proposed within 300 metres of an existing care facility or shelter, any cumulative impacts of the facilities on the character of the surrounding neighborhood, community amenities and on public safety and policing services should be assessed when evaluating the application.”
I believe we all recognize and appreciate the important and necessary work these organizations perform in our city. But, with 18 Addiction Treatment Centres in all of Calgary, does it make sense to have a 3rd one installed within 300m of two other treatment centres?
Also, even if you advocate for a well-run organization to purchase and convert this building to an addiction treatment centre, there is NO GUARANTEE this organization will be the ultimate owner. This conversation is about the communities' willingness to support the discretionary designation of another Addiction Treatment centre in our neighbourhood. It could be purchased by ANY organization for this purpose.
By signing this petition I am opposing this change of use application.
