Harsh Bavishi started this petition to Cairns Regional Council and

Dear Cairns Regional Council,

My name is Harsh Bavishi, I am a graduate of architecture and a resident of Forest Gardens.
This petition regards the 3-storey, 20 unit development proposed by Dixon Homes and currently approved for construction in Forest Gardens.
The development neighbours a community adored duck pond and park.
As a designer myself and a resident of the area, I believe that the development will have severe environmental impact, forever altering the aesthetic of the area.
I believe the dense construction will impact the local fauna, not only during construction, but after completion as well.
The 3-storey building will further reduce the solar access to the lake and impact naturally prevailing winds.

Protecting and preserving our natural beauty is something we should always strive for, especially in a city like Cairns. Although the development has been approved by Cairns council in December 2019, it is important to voice our opinion and standup for the voiceless. The development may not be halted due to the approval, but it is important to understand the damage it will cause.

The development approval gives reason for change in town planning, creating stricter guidelines and allowing for community input. There are 3 main points which I want to address against the development.

1. Damage to Environment, impact on local fauna
The local ducks suffered tremendously when the town houses were built next to the pond in 2015, forcing them to flee the area.
The population was significantly reduced. One can only imagine the damage a 3 storey apartment complex would do.

2. It's not 'Forest Gardens', it just doesn't fit in
The surrounding context of the site is predominantly private detached homes as well a variety of parks, home to a diversity of flora and fauna.
A 3 storey apartment unit simply does not make sense. Refer to page 9 of "Standards for New Construction Social Housing: Houses and Apartments December 2015". Do you want to be greeted by an overpowering concrete building upon entering Forest Gardens? An area known for its natural beauty.

3. Destroying the heart of Forest Gardens.
The building was built in 1995 as the Delfin sales office for the whole estate, giving the building symbolic value.
Not only did Forest Gardens begin with the building, but the design of the building reflects the traditional Queenslander typology.
This gives the building reason to be refurbished and adapted as a community hub, complimenting the community adored duck pond, not damaging it.

As a graduate of architecture, I have ideas for the potential of the site and I strongly believe that a multi-residential block is not the right fit.
Thankyou for taking the time to read my petition.

Kind Regards,
Harsh Bavishi
