Byron Deserves BALANCE!
UPDATE: A HUGE THANKYOU TO EVERYONE WHO SIGNED THIS PETITION. AS AT 8 MARCH 2023 DEADLINE, WE HAD 5826 (ONLINE AND OFFLINE) SIGNATURES. I SENT A SUBMISSION TO THE INDEPENDENT PLANNING COMMISSION AND WE HOPE THE COMMISSIONERS MAKE SOME RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE NSW GOVT WHICH WILL ENCOURAGE THEM TO IMPLEMENT STRONGER REGULATION AND SOME BALANCE FOR ALL.
THE LINK TO MY SUBMISSION IS BELOW - UNDER EMAIL SUBMISSIONS.
https://www.ipcn.nsw.gov.au/cases/2022/12/byron-shire-short-term-rental-pp
Background On 14 Dec 2022, the NSW Government broke their election commitment to Byron Shire on controlling short-term rental accommodation (STRA), the day before councillors voted unanimously to lower the rental cap, in some parts of the shire, from 180 to 90 days! The IPC (Independent Planning Commission) will now intervene to 'provide advice' to the govt and 'whether the govt should allow the proposed changes to go forward'.
Mostly out of town investors are buying up numerous properties and converting them from permanent to holiday letting. This is resulting in a large section of our local population being forced out, many of whom have lived here for years and contributed greatly to the creative resonance of the community. We have so many homeless and displaced people in Byron Shire now due to lack of permanent rentals and over inflated rents
We need to get this housing crisis under control. It is very important to get the balance right so we have an equitable and fair outcome.
PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION AND SHARE FAR AND WIDE! The deadline is now 8 March 2023. We need to show that community matters and we need longer term, more permanent rentals in this area.
Byron will lose out if tourism win out over community.
