Did you know that rat poison kills at least 32 native wildlife species in Australia that we know of.
And that really is the tip of the iceberg. It is very underreported and understudied. With the myriad of threats to wildlife this is probably one of the most agonising way to die. It is also entirely preventable.
The sanitised description of these products is, Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) bind to enzymes responsible for recycling of vitamin K and impair blood clotting. In simple language, they just bleed to death. Bleed uncontrollably into organs including lungs, brains and bowel.
This is an URGENT call to restrict retail sales of anticoagulant rodenticides, especially "second-generation" products (SGAR’s) that are killing native wildlife at an astounding rate.
Australian wildlife rescuers are drowning in dead owls because of these lethal rodenticides, and scientists such as Western Australian Professor Rob Davis, says the situation has become so dire their freezers are filled to the brim with at least "50 to 100 dead Owls" - in the space of one month. Disturbingly, these poisons are on currently on shelves at Woolworths, Coles and Bunnings and available to anyone.
Scientists and environmentalists have previously called on retailers to stop selling rodenticides that contain toxins including brodifacum and bromodialone, but they will not listen.
It's up to us to put pressure on the retailers - - let's start with the biggest hardware retailer in Australia Bunnings!
Tell the CEO of Bunnings, Michael Schneider to stop the sale of SGAR poisons and let him know how concerned you are about our threatened owls and other native animals being killed.
