Build wildlife safety bridges in Concord, NC

Build wildlife safety bridges in Concord, NC
The Issue
Driving towards Charlotte passing through the backroads of concord with my husband and friend, I encountered a heartbreaking scene: a baby turtle attempting to cross the road. In a split second, I had already driven past it before realizing what it was. Desperately, I turned around to help it across, but horrifically watched as a truck purposely swerved to crush it. This experience shook me deeply. These animals have no voice in the face of human expansion, as their homes are destroyed and their chances of survival grow slim.
In Concord, NC, where industrial growth persists, it’s essential we take responsibility for the wildlife that inhabits these areas. As lands are cleared for new warehouses and similar developments, the natural habitats of countless animals are destroyed, forcing them into perilous situations on busy roads. Wildlife-vehicle collisions not only lead to tragic losses of wildlife but also pose dangers to motorists.
We propose the construction of wildlife safety bridges in Concord, especially in areas undergoing new industrial developments. Wildlife bridges or overpasses provide a safer passage for animals, allowing them to cross pedestrian or vehicle-laden roads without danger. Studies, such as those by the Western Transportation Institute, have shown that these structures significantly reduce roadkill and improve drivers' safety.
Implementing these bridges is a feasible solution that addresses the immediate need for safe animal crossings, while also providing alternative habitats. For every new warehouse built, let's require developers to allocate resources towards constructing these safety bridges and ensuring wildlife are relocated safely.
Our proposal aims for a harmonious balance between advancing development and conserving the environment. Protecting the local wildlife in Concord is a community responsibility, and it’s time we hold developers accountable to also care for the creatures we coexist with.
Help us give a voice to the voiceless and ensure their safety by signing this petition. Together, we can make Concord a leader in both development and conservation.
