The issue

We, the undersigned, call on the City of Gold Coast to support a development pathway that allows a proposed Trump-branded tower in Surfers Paradise to be approved at an iconic height of 1,000 metres, creating a globally recognised landmark and a once-in-a-generation economic catalyst for the Gold Coast.

A 1,000-metre tower would:

1) Supercharge the local economy

A landmark of this scale would drive construction jobs, hospitality and tourism growth, and long-term revenue through visitors, events, and global media attention. The Gold Coast competes internationally for investment and tourism—this would be a high-visibility signal that the city is open for big projects and big ambition.

2) Create a new Australian national icon

Australia has Opera Houses, Bridges, and stadiums—what we don’t have is a true vertical monument that instantly tells the world where you are. A 1,000-metre tower would be an unmistakable skyline signature: “That’s the Gold Coast.”

3) Strengthen Australia–US ties

A major US-branded investment project would symbolise deep people-to-people and commercial links between Australia and the United States—links that matter culturally, economically, and strategically.

4) Reinforce strategic partnership (including AUKUS)

High-profile American investment can strengthen the wider Australia–U.S. relationship that underpins arrangements like AUKUS, including long-term defence cooperation.

We call on the City of Gold Coast to:

  • Support a planning pathway that does not arbitrarily cap ambition, and that allows proponents to explore a signature height target of 1,000 metres subject to safety and compliance.
  • Fast-track a transparent feasibility and impact process, including engineering, wind, shadowing, infrastructure load, aviation/airspace constraints, emergency services access, and environmental impacts.
  • Require a community benefit package, including local procurement targets, apprenticeships, public realm upgrades, and funding for local services that will support increased visitation.
  • Establish a public consultation process that is robust, time-limited, and focused on measurable impacts rather than partisan branding debates.

The principle
The Gold Coast became the Gold Coast by refusing to be timid. This is a city built on sunshine, spectacle, and unapologetic scale. If we’re going to build, let’s build something the world can’t ignore.

Approve the tower. Make it 1,000 metres. Make it a landmark.
