Los Angeles is desperately in need of more transit. We are currently reliant on cars as the only dependable form of transportation. Limited rail/rapid transit service is currently too sparse for people to depend on it as their primary form of transport, and traffic makes street bus travel times unpredictable.

The most sustainable option for our future is a large expansion of the Metro BRT network under a renewed and unique identity: Intermodal Rapid Transit.

Here are a few benefits:

ACCESS

  • 10 minute walk (0.5 miles) or less to a station for most residents in densely populated areas of LA County
  • connections to existing and planned transit lines without having to pass through Downtown LA would make it easier to travel all over Los Angeles County
  • transit lines planned for direct access to educational institutions, other transit modalities (LAX, LGB, Metrolink, etc.), and cultural institutions (i.e. sporting arenas, concert venues, museums)
  • would provide increased pedestrian access to most business corridors, allowing for more walk-in patronage
  • expanded service for historically-overlooked working class communities in South LA, Central LA, and the Eastside

SUSTAINABILITY

  • without lease/finance payments, repair, and auto insurance, etc., community members could dramatically reduce the cost of transportation budget
  • mass transit is drastically better for the environment, reducing emissions, personal consumption of harmfully sourced resources (oil, lithium, etc.) and automobile building materials

IDENTITY

  • residents could identify with and take pride in this system, unlike previous Bus Rapid Transit proposals
  • would make LA Metro Rapid Transit different from that of any other major US city
  • stations would bear the same branding and signage as current Metro Rail to fully integrate it into the Metro Rapid Transit system

RELIABILITY

  • dedicated, center-running rIght of way and signal preference allows for travel times comparable to rail
  • unique, triple length vehicles would have similar ridership capacity to current light rail lines
  • stations and vehicles would have emergency intercoms connecting to Metro Ambassadors for increased rider safety

Given the abbreviated timeline leading up to the 2028 Olympics, the urgent need for more transit options, and the need for cost-effective infrastructure projects, the Intermodal Rapid Transit system is an attainable way to transform the way in which Los Angeles travels.
