Build the Beltline Light Rail Atlanta Was Promised

Build the Beltline Light Rail Atlanta Was Promised
The Issue
More than a decade ago, Atlanta was promised a light rail running along the Beltline — a 22-mile loop meant to connect dozens of neighborhoods, open access to jobs and businesses, and reduce traffic congestion. Today, that promise is still unfulfilled, and Atlantans are watching the project drift further off track.
Plans have shifted again. The segment along the Eastside Trail — once slated to be the starting point for construction — has been shelved after political changes and community disputes. Mayor Andre Dickens now says construction should begin on the Southside instead. While the latest proposal still calls for extending the Atlanta Streetcar east to connect with the Beltline, officials admit the exact route is undecided.
For residents, the frustration is real. Every time leadership changes or priorities shift, the starting line moves. Communities that have waited years for reliable transit are told to wait even longer, with no firm guarantee their segment will ever be built. Without a binding plan and secure funding, whole neighborhoods risk being left behind.
The Beltline is more than a walking trail — it’s an opportunity for equitable transit and economic development. Delays don’t just postpone convenience; they delay opportunity for Atlantans without reliable transportation today. They also risk driving up costs, which could push the project even further out of reach.
We are calling on city leaders, Beltline officials, and MARTA to commit to a clear, public, and binding timeline for the light rail’s completion across all segments — not just the ones that are politically convenient at the moment. The $3.5 billion investment, plus proposed MARTA infill stations, must benefit the entire city fairly and equitably.
It’s time to stop shifting plans and start building the transit system Atlanta was promised. Without action now, we risk another decade of talk without tracks — and another generation missing the chance to ride a truly connected Beltline.
Sign this petition to demand a commitment to build the Atlanta Beltline Light Rail in full. Atlanta deserves the future it was promised, and the time to deliver is now.
