The Issue

Maya, a young survivor of the Tumbler Ridge school shooting, continues her fight for life amidst unimaginable suffering. My heart breaks each time I think of her struggle, a reminder of the urgent need to address mental health issues to prevent such tragedies from recurring. The shocking events at the Tumbler Ridge BC School have unveiled glaring gaps in our mental health system, reminding us of the immense importance of access to psychiatric care.

In light of this, I am calling on the Government of British Columbia to take decisive action by building and funding two psychiatric hospitals. One hospital should be established in the Northern region of the province, while the other is needed in the Lower Mainland area. These hospitals would provide comprehensive mental health treatment, including both voluntary and involuntary care, addressing the root causes of such tragedies and helping those afflicted by mental illnesses, who might otherwise remain untreated.

The demand for mental health services in BC is steadily rising, with a significant portion of the population lacking access to the care they need. The current mental health infrastructure is insufficient to cater to the growing needs, stretching existing resources thin and leaving many without adequate support. Establishing these hospitals would not only ensure the availability of crucial services but also foster a society that prioritises mental health well-being as a cornerstone of public safety.

Statistics show that early intervention and adequate treatment can significantly reduce the risk of violent incidents linked to untreated mental illnesses. By investing in these psychiatric hospitals, we invest in the safety and well-being of our communities, potentially averting further tragedies like the one that affected Maya and many others.

By signing this petition, you can help urge the BC government to take immediate and concrete steps toward this essential initiative. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those suffering from mental health issues and work toward a safer future for everyone in British Columbia. Please sign and share this petition to build a better tomorrow.
