The Issue

As members of the RVA community, we are calling on local leaders to address a pressing and long-overlooked need: a dedicated all-women’s fitness facility. For many women in our city, particularly Muslim women, the absence of a space that respects modesty, privacy, and inclusivity is not a minor inconvenience. It is a barrier to basic health and wellness.

Richmond is a proud, diverse, and growing city. Yet its current fitness landscape fails to reflect that diversity. Traditional mixed-gender gym environments are inaccessible to a significant portion of the female population, including those whose faith, cultural background, or personal comfort requires a women-only space. This gap is not theoretical, it is felt daily by women who forgo physical activity altogether due to a lack of suitable options.

An all-women’s gym in Richmond would serve as a comprehensive wellness hub, a place where women of all backgrounds can prioritize their health without compromise. Envisioned amenities would include:

   •    Open gym with various equipment for different fitness activities catered to all levels

    •    Group fitness classes tailored to all skill and experience levels

    •    Wellness activities designed to support mental and emotional wellbeing

    •    Nutritional education classes to empower healthy and informed lifestyle choices

    •    On-site childcare so that motherhood is never a barrier to self-care

Together, these offerings would create a space where women feel genuinely supported in every dimension of their health journey and where community bonds are strengthened in the process.

We respectfully urge Richmond’s community leaders and decision-makers to champion this initiative. Investing in this facility is an investment in the public health, equity, and unity of our city.

Please sign this petition and help us turn this vision into reality. Every signature brings us one step closer to a Richmond that works for all of us.
