The Issue
Growing up in Lafayette, TN, skateboarding has always been more than just a hobby for me and my friends; it's a passion and a way to express ourselves creatively. But our love for skateboarding comes with a challenge – the nearest skatepark is over 30 minutes away. This distance makes it difficult for many locals, especially young people without transportation, to nurture their skateboarding skills and enjoy a safe, dedicated environment to skate.
Lafayette's youth need a local skatepark. Skateboarding is not only an exciting sport that promotes physical fitness but also fosters a sense of community, discipline, and perseverance. By building a skatepark here, we can provide a constructive outlet for energy and creativity, potentially increasing the visibility of positive youth engagement within our community.
The lack of nearby facilities often means we resort to skating on streets or in parking lots, which brings its own challenges and dangers. Streets are not designed for skateboarding and pose risks of accidents and injury, not to mention the possibility of being confronted by business owners or law enforcement when using public spaces for skating.
There are more than 3.1 million active skateboarders in the United States, according to the International Association of Skateboard Companies, and the sport continues to grow in popularity. Cities like Lafayette need to keep up with this trend by providing appropriate infrastructure to support our developing athletes. Building a skatepark would not only cater to skateboarders but also attract BMX bikers and rollerbladers, creating a comprehensive recreational area for all.
From a municipal perspective, investing in a skatepark could yield significant benefits. Local governments that have implemented public skateparks often see increased engagement from youth in constructive activities, decreased incidents of vandalism and loitering, and even a boost in local tourism.
