The Issue

Growing up in Middleburg, FL, I’ve always loved skating. It’s a passion, a hobby, and a way of life. But every time I want to practice or join my friends for a skate session, I find myself driving 30 to 45 minutes just to reach a safe and equipped skatepark. It’s frustrating, time-consuming, and frankly, not accessible for everyone who shares the same passion. Our town of Middleburg deserves better than this.

Ronnie Van Zant Memorial Park, with its open spaces and community-centric atmosphere, presents the perfect opportunity for a skatepark. Not only would a local skatepark provide a nearby and safe environment for skating enthusiasts, but it would also foster community engagement and offer a healthy, physical activity for our youth. This park could become a vibrant hub where skaters of all ages and skill levels could gather, practice, and learn from each other.

According to the Tony Hawk Foundation, skateparks reduce youth crime rates by offering young people a constructive outlet for their energy. They also promote physical health and help prevent obesity, a growing concern across the United States. Moreover, skateparks can boost local economies by attracting visitors, thus increasing foot traffic to nearby businesses.

Communities around the country have seen the positive impacts of skateparks. In San Diego, California, the YMCA Krause Family Skate & Bike Park has become a community staple, bringing together diverse groups while offering a safe place for recreation. Middleburg can mirror this success.

The cost of building a skatepark is feasible and can be offset by fundraising, grants, and public-private partnerships. Many cities have successfully raised the money needed through community events and external funding, making it possible even with limited resources.

We urge the Clay County Officials and community leaders to consider our request seriously. A skatepark at Ronnie Van Zant Memorial Park would enrich our town culturally, economically, and socially. Let’s create a legacy for the younger generations and provide a much-needed facility for our community.

Please sign this petition to show your support for building a skatepark in Middleburg. Your signature can make a difference in how our town progresses and how we offer fulfilling and healthy opportunities to our youth and residents.
