The issue

Most would agree that Paterson and neighbouring suburbs are a great place to raise a family. But we are missing one thing- A Community Skate Park! It's estimated that there are 461 children aged 5-17 in the Paterson, Vacy, Martins Creek &  Webbers Creek area. That's 461 children missing out!

FROM THE KIDS:

"Our local community doesn't have an area for children and youths to hang out safely. Having a skate park would mean we can exercise & develop our skills while socialising. It would also give us something to look forward to!"

FROM THE ADULTS:

The evidence is clear.  Skate Parks are a vital space that encourage children's & young peoples physical,  social & mental health and contribute to vibrant, positive community cohesion.  Local skate parks have been shown to benefit children's & teens:

  • social and mental health by building resilience , peer-to-peer learning & a positive self-esteem through progressive achievement. (Wood, L. et al. 2014. and Walker et al, 2026).
  • physical wellbeing by developing & strengthening their co-ordination, fitness, balance & proprioception. (Fillows Skate Team, 2026.)
  • as well as providing a safe, dynamic 'hang out' within the community. (Bradley, G. 2010).

This facility would provide a safe, environment that encourages physical activity and helps to combat sedentary lifestyles—a growing concern globally. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 1 in 4 children and adolescents are overweight or obese. By building a skate park, we will offer a constructive outlet for energy that fosters physical health and develops co-ordination, balance, proprioception & positive physical habits.

Research has shown that skateboarding and similar activities can significantly improve self-esteem and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, as stated by the Australian Psychological Association. Furthermore, such spaces encourage social interaction and community bonding, build resilience and peer-to-peer learning. In towns like ours, where youth can feel isolated and unmotivated, a skate park will provide a sense of belonging and purpose.

Communities throughout New South Wales that have invested in skate parks, such as Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour, have seen tangible benefits, including reductions in local crime rates and increased community cohesion. These facilities actively draw young people away from the streets where is is dangerous to ride and into safe, health & wellbeing-promoting environments.

However, the development of this skate park requires your support. It calls for local council action, support and funding. Our community possesses the drive and passion to make this dream a reality, but we need widespread backing to bring it to fruition.

Please join us in supporting the construction of a skate park in Paterson. Together, we will invest in a brighter future for our children—a future that offers healthier living and joyous memories.
