The Issue

I drive down Smith Drive every day, and every day I am struck by the potential dangers caused by the absence of a sidewalk on such a busy street. This street is a pivotal route for many in our community, frequently used by commuters, unhoused residents, as well as school children waiting at bus stops. Yet, it lacks a basic amenity: a sidewalk.

The risks are evident. Without a designated sidewalk, pedestrians, including children and the elderly, are forced to share this narrow road with drivers. Consequently, this situation not only endangers pedestrians but also poses significant challenges for drivers. The hidden driveways along Smith Drive increase the possibility of sudden encounters, while during October, the sun's position blinds drivers at two hilltop points on the road putting those on foot at a huge risk.

Moreover, installing a sidewalk would substantially benefit the entire community. Residents could use it for their daily exercise routines, be it a brisk walk or a peaceful dog stroll, without the constant worry of oncoming traffic. This change would promote a healthier lifestyle by encouraging more people to engage in outdoor activities safely.

With only .7 mile of sidewalk, we would be taking a significant step towards safeguarding our pedestrians and improving the quality of life for every resident. We urge the local authorities to prioritize this safety measure. Please support this initiative and help us create a safer, more accessible community by signing this petition.
