Build a safe bike lane on Gandy Bridge

Build a safe bike lane on Gandy Bridge
The Issue
Back on May 17, 2025, I was involved in a tragic car accident on the Gandy Bridge in Saint Petersburg, Florida. It was a heartbreaking event that resulted in a fatality and left a lasting impact on me. This accident opened my eyes to the grave dangers faced by slower-moving vehicles like mopeds, cyclists, and pedestrians who attempt to cross the Gandy Bridge. The lack of proper infrastructure severely heightens the risk of being struck by larger vehicles simply because these slower-moving entities are often not seen.
The Gandy Bridge is a vital artery connecting Saint Petersburg to Tampa, frequented by thousands daily. However, it remains a source of concern for those who rely on alternative, more eco-friendly modes of transport. We need a designated bike lane that would provide a safe passage for these vulnerable road users. It's not only about avoiding accidents and saving precious lives but also about promoting sustainability and encouraging non-motorized forms of transportation in our community.
In the United States, nearly 1,000 cyclists are killed, and over 130,000 are injured in crashes on the roads every year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This is a staggering statistic that highlights the need for improved infrastructure to ensure safety for all.
By establishing a protected bike lane on the Gandy Bridge, we could drastically reduce the risk of accidents and fatalities. This would not only protect cyclists, mopeds, and pedestrians but also alleviate the stress motorists feel about potential crashes, creating a harmonious coexistence on the road. The construction of a bike lane would also complement efforts to reduce carbon emissions by encouraging more residents to take up cycling or walking as viable modes of transport.
We urge the City of Saint Petersburg, the Florida Department of Transportation, and relevant authorities to prioritize this issue and take action. Studies should be conducted to explore the best solutions for integrating a safe bike lane onto the Gandy Bridge, ensuring it meets all necessary safety and engineering standards.
By signing this petition, you are joining a movement to make our roads safer for everyone. Let's prevent further tragedies and bring change to Saint Petersburg's infrastructure for the greater good.
