Since the Grape Street skatepark was demolished, we haven’t had a safe or legal place to skate in Hammondsport, NY. Just the other day, I was threatened with having my board taken away for simply riding up the road.

Without a skatepark, local skaters are forced into following strict rules when using the villages roads and sidewalks such as, it being completely banned on all public sidewalks inside the central business district also,  Local laws prohibit skating in the middle of public vehicle lanes or blocking traffic.  and, the closest skatepark to Hammondpsort is over 30 miles away which can discourage new skater wanting to get into the sport . We shouldn’t have to choose between giving up skating and risking a ticket just because there’s nowhere else to go.

A small public concrete skatepark would give local kids a safe place to practice, stay active, and meet other people. It could also help keep skaters off busy streets and bring people from near by communities to Hammondsport.
