Growing up in Las Estrellas neighborhood in Somerton, Arizona, I've seen children spending their time playing in streets, empty lots, grass or dirt because there's no playground around. It's disheartening for our kids, pre-teens, and teenagers not to have a safe and suitable environment to explore their creativity, have fun, and experience their childhoods fully. As a member of this community, I am deeply concerned about the lack of recreational facilities for our children and the missed opportunities for them to develop essential social and physical skills.

Neighborhoods around us boast beautiful parks filled with laughing children, swings, slides, and climbing frames. These spaces not only offer fun but are crucial for physical activity, socialization, and mental well-being. Yet, Las Estrellas is still waiting for a safe, convenient, and engaging place for our children to play. Instead, our kids stay inside, stuck on their screens, missing out on their childhood. 

Statistics show that access to playgrounds significantly contributes to children's physical health, cognitive development, and emotional well-being. In a study by the Landscape and Urban Planning journal, children living within a half-mile of a park are more likely to meet recommended physical activity levels. The absence of such facilities in our neighborhood means we are missing out on these vital benefits.

Families in Las Estrellas deserve a place where our children can run, play, and thrive outside the confines of their backyards. A community playground would act as a focal point for family activities, fostering a sense of community and belonging among residents. Parents would have peace of mind knowing their children are playing safely, within view, and in an environment designed for fun and exploration.

We propose a specific plan to build a playground in an available plot of land in Las Estrellas. The city of Somerton and the Parks and Recreation Department can work together to allocate funds and resources to make this vision a reality. Community support and participation could also help in fundraising and development efforts, ensuring that the playground meets the needs and dreams of our local children.
