The Issue
My daughter, like many others in our community, has been denied a place in our local high school, forcing her to attend a school out of our area. This is not just our family's struggle but a growing concern for countless families in our neighborhood. Our children deserve the opportunity to study close to home, in the community they know and are comfortable in. However, the local schools are oversubscribed, leaving many of our kids without a spot and compelling them to travel long distances every day.
In recent years, we have witnessed a surge in our community's population, largely due to the construction of new housing. While new homes provide invaluable living spaces, they have exponentially increased the demand for local school places. Our existing schools cannot keep up with this demand, resulting in many children being displaced and sent to schools outside their communities. This situation not only affects the children but also places a heavy burden on families, who have to manage the challenges of long commutes and the emotional toll of their children adapting to unfamiliar environments.
Statistics show that attending a school within one's own community leads to better educational outcomes, a sense of belonging, and stronger community ties. Therefore, rather than expanding our community's housing capacity, we urgently need to focus on building a new high school that can accommodate the growing number of students. The new school would not only relieve the pressure on existing schools but also ensure that every child in our area has access to education in a familiar and supportive setting.
We call on local authorities and educational planners to prioritize the construction of a new high school in our area. This is crucial for maintaining our community's educational standards and ensuring that our children can continue to receive their education close to home.
Please sign this petition to make a change for the betterment of our children's future and for the stability of our community. Together, we can advocate for the educational needs of our children and promote a stronger, more united community.
