Build a New 60K+ Seat Stadium for Cricket and AFL in Brisbane
The issue
Brisbane is in dire need of a new stadium to host cricket and AFL matches, ensuring the city remains a premier destination for sports. The current facilities are outdated and unable to accommodate the growing number of fans and events. A new stadium would not only enhance an outstanding experience for spectators but also leave a lasting legacy for future generations. In fact, as Brisbane grows towards 5 million people we'll need a 60,000 to 65,000 seat stadium. Investing in this infrastructure will boost local economy, create jobs, and promote community engagement through sports. It is not going to be cheap but as John Coates AC has said "If the city [Brisbane] needs a new stadium, that's on the city and don't tick it off as an Olympic cost". This is important. Sure the Olympics will use it but we are not building it for the 2032 games. Sign this petition to support the construction of a state-of-the-art stadium in Brisbane!
QSAC is a huge waste of money, has poor public transport that would require more money to fix, does not solve the long-term requirements needed for cricket and AFL in Brisbane, and does NOT offer any legacy. Spending $1.6 billion to have it downgraded to 14,000 seats after the Olympics is ridiculous. And put another $1 billion into Suncorp and the GABBA means there is no money saved compared to building a new larger stadium. Not to mention that the $500 million allocated to 'upgrade' the GABBA would have no long term gains, as the plan is to then demolish it - again wasting money!
There are a few excellent alternatives:
1) Rebuild the GABBA - it has legacy already, it has the new GABBA cross-river rail underground train station so public transport is sorted, it is well connected to the city, supports local business during events (there are fantastic bars/pubs, cafes, restaurants, and hotels with more too come). The downside is having to manage and pay for disruption to cricket and AFL during construction. The school issue needs work too but there's a point of view that it should have been moved decades ago. Who really wants their children having to cross a 4-lane road to get to school?
2) Victoria Park - it would have legacy, there is public transport although probably not quite as convenient as compared to the GABBA, it would mean less disruption to cricket and AFL while building occurs. The downside is taking beautiful green space (even if offset by turning the GABBA area into green space) and local infrastructure isn't there or at least not on par with what the GABBA has in terms of pre- and post- game events.
3) Hamilton - it would have legacy, there is lots of infrastructure in terms of pre- and post- game events and more is being built, it would mean less disruption to cricket and AFL while building occurs. The downside is that public transport would need to be built (there's a case that this is needed to Hamilton anyway e.g. a heavy rail train line).

Let's get this done properly!
