The Issue

For the past three years, Dance II and III students at Ukiah High School have passionately advocated for their own dedicated dance classroom, but their pleas have been consistently overlooked. Despite our efforts, including attending board meetings and presenting concerns to facility administrators, the need for a safe and appropriate dance space remains unmet. Our teacher has persistently highlighted the pressing dangers—such as exposed nails on the stage, which pose a significant risk to our safety, and the accumulation of trash, which compromises the only available dance space. These unacceptable conditions are not only a safety hazard but also deeply disappointing for current and future students who aspire to join the dance program.

At Pomolita, the middle school has successfully provided a dedicated space for their dance students, nurturing their passion and talent. It is disheartening to think that when these students transition to Ukiah High School, they will face the harsh reality of being neglected and deprived of a similar environment in which their love for dance can flourish. Our school should foster the growth and development of all its students’ talents, regardless of their discipline.

The benefits of a dedicated dance classroom are numerous and well-documented. It would provide a safe and equipped environment for students to learn and practice. Such a space would enable us to develop our technical skills, explore creative expression, and work collaboratively as a team. Moreover, having a designated space would allow for a more efficient use of time and resources, as we would not need to work around other conflicting uses of the current inadequate facilities.

We urge the Ukiah High School administration and the related authorities to acknowledge the importance of dance as a critical component of arts education. Investing in a proper dance classroom would not only enhance the students’ educational experience but also showcase the school’s commitment to a well-rounded and inclusive curriculum. Let us stand together to champion the rights of dance students to learn and grow in a supportive and adequately resourced environment.

Please sign this petition to ensure that future generations of dancers at Ukiah High School can have the dedicated space they deserve, allowing them to shine and succeed in their artistic endeavors. The future is in your hands, help sign now.
