Build a community skatepark for skaters
The Issue
I am a passionate skater, and the joy of skating runs deep in my family. My daughter has shown interest in learning too, and together, we dream of having a safe and accessible place to skate. Unfortunately, the nearest skatepark is a 30-minute drive away, and without a car, a simple visit becomes quite the challenge. Skating closer to home means we often find ourselves having to navigate through risky traffic just to enjoy a sport we love.
Many members of our community share this sentiment. Skating offers children and adults the opportunity to exercise, express themselves creatively, and form friendships, all while having immense fun. However, the lack of a proper skatepark close to us curtails these opportunities, leaving many skaters to practice in unsuitable areas, often risking their safety.
A solution is clear: Let’s build a community skatepark! This should be a place that embodies the spirit of the skaters it serves, embracing values of respect, cleanliness, and camaraderie. A community-managed park will allow skaters to not only enforce these ideals but also maintain the park’s condition, ensuring it remains an inviting space.
Statistics show that skateparks bring numerous benefits, including reducing skateboarding in unauthorized and potentially dangerous areas, and fostering positive social interaction among youth. Cities like Portland have seen significant reductions in vandalism and loitering with the introduction of well-managed skateparks.
We propose the creation of a community skatepark designed and looked after by the skating community itself, accommodating all skill levels and ages. With rules encouraging personal responsibility—such as 'skate at your own risk,' 'keep it clean,' and 'be respectful'—we can create a thriving space for skaters to grow and connect.
Join us in this initiative to provide a safer, closer, and more supportive environment for skaters of all ages in our community. Please sign this petition and help us roll towards a brighter future full of wheels and joy!
