Shekon Sewakwekon - Hello Everyone - Last Tuesday I attended the Buffalo Common Council meeting where Rev Pridgen, the Council President, Councilmember Smith and Councilmember Rivera offered strong support encouraging involvement of the Native community in selecting a new name for the island and even refusing to say the S-word. While Councilmember Golombek supports changing the name he painted the issue as one of political correctness and would like to hold a contest for a new name (thus belittling the racist nature of this name and further disengaging Native communities from involvement in restoring respectful histories). Overall - a great success last Tuesday! I received word yesterday that the Buffalo Common Council Community Development Committee will be meeting TODAY at 1:00 pm in Buffalo City Hall on the 13th floor in council chambers. Here I will have an opportunity to speak about the matter at hand. Niawen Sewakwekon!
